Available for: iOS , Android. Rather than dealing with individual rides, My Virtual Mission allows you to set an ultimate goal and then work towards it. So, for instance, you can decide that over the coming few months you are going to pedal the same distance as riding from the east to the west coast of the USA.
Rather than actually riding it, you set up the virtual journey on the app, and every time you cycle or run it plots the same distance on a map of your virtual journey, adding rides on each time you do them. As a goal-setting and motivational tool, it's good fun. You could also use it to set up a long-distance ride for charity fund-raising, with the app including a function to track how much you've raised.

DesFit , who has, and kindly lent me his high altitude shot:. What the feature shows is your current altitude adaptation level. In fact, a pro triathlete friend of mine wrote a guest post here on that very topic some 8 years ago.
For the rest of us, we can just use this as a post-ride pub excuse for why we climbed so poorly on our week-long vacation in the Alps. Effectively giving you credit for sleeping at high altitude. Or, at least me. Garmin did note that these are capped though to account for maximum hydration intake limits of the human body. Note that some of these stats require a power meter like FTP.
It then shows you in the dotted line the optimal aka balanced training load bucketing. This is telling you how many hours you should wait until your next hard workout:. And finally, one of the newer metrics not seen on any other Garmin device is Power Curve.
The time duration is selectable as three choices — one month, three months, and twelve months. This also applies to the host of free training plans that Garmin has on Garmin Connect.
The weather simply shows the weather for that day of the week that the workout is scheduled. A watch could fall apart and give you dire electrical shocks while doing so, but if it shows you on the wrong side of the road? Oh hell no, bring on the fury of the internet! GPS accuracy can be looked at in a number of different ways, but I prefer to look at it using a number of devices in real-world scenarios across a vast number of activities.
I use other devices at once, trying to get a clear picture of how a given set of devices handles conditions on a certain day. For example, for watches I try to not place two units next to each other on my wrists, as that can impact signal. Plus, wearing multiple watches on the same wrist is well known to impact optical HR accuracy.
For cycling units, I arrange them on my handlebars using standard mounts — usually one on either side of the step, often a bit separated from each other. Next, as noted, I use just my daily training routes. The workouts you see here are just my normal daily workouts.
This has included workouts in: Amsterdam city, countryside and Mallorca mountains, ocean, countryside , California off-road, hills, forests, seaside. I rode this nearly a month ago, so while this firmware was slightly older, it still shows pretty solid GPS performance. This super twisty-turny route is incredibly difficult from a GPS performance standpoint. There are rock tunnels, huge cliffs next to you, and plenty of GPS-blocking goodness to hose up units as we see the Samsung illustrate.
But I just wanted to show you first the density of trees. In fact, you can see the Samsung straight-up gave up on life half-way through this and just cut the corner entirely. The other units tracks are actually very close. Perhaps by skill, or perhaps by dumb luck. They did it both directions though. Now I had a quick lunch at the bottom before heading up.
GPS-wise, units were fine here. I left them recording on my bike while I ate. Though I did see some elevation issues here were it showed me quite a bit higher in elevation than I really was ft higher than the sea I was sitting next to.
And again, that was a month ago on older firmware. The Samsung…is…well…yeah. This was a nice coastal ride that also went through some gigantic tree forests.
Plus it had a couple of rollers and a solid climb mid-way through. Why you ask? It was in my back jersey pocket. I needed to photograph the Edge solo-cup:. But how could I not go to satellite view with scenery like that? Oh, back in the pocket it went for a climb to get other photos. Why bother including this you ask? Well two reason. This shows you what can happen.
It was at least pretty consistent in that when it went into my pocket it went a bit sideways. This ride unfortunately had a lot of that, as we were filming other videos for things that were published prior to this review and thus prior to this embargo. Though interestingly the Edge seemed to handle the pocketing better than the Edge on this ride. No idea why. And this is actually in the trees a fair bit alongside a highway.
As for altitude? Pretty similar overall, however the Edge did seem offset about 18 meters throughout the entire ride. I suspect it got a weird initial fix which is used to then calibrate the barometer. Nobody does anything stupid, so all the tracks look fine from 30,ft. Note that all of these units are recording at 1-second intervals.
The thing with analyzing road bike GPS files, is that they very rarely fail. Seriously, super rarely do units screw it up. That said, time and time again I found the Polar Vantage V off in the water, as seen here. Mind you, this is the exact same GPS chipset between these three units all Sony, and all likely using the same chipset.
The difference though is in the modes and power delivery. Not only that, but the Edge can deliver far more power to the Sony chipset and has more space for the antenna than a wearable. Oh, and altitude on this one? Welcome to the Netherlands. Or at least, the Edge lineup specifically. Again as I noted earlier this is likely more to do with the fact that Garmin has enabled additional GPS modes Galileo , as well as simply has more power it can throw at the GPS chipset than a wearable can.
Plus, bike computers have much more room for better antenna design. You can use it as well for your own gadget comparisons, more details here. Of course, there are plenty more units in the product comparison calculator, so you can make your own charts here as well. Again, remember you can make your own charts within the product comparison calculator here. The Edge is a solid little unit, it works well and the touchscreen also works equally as well.
The new features on the Edge , especially ClimbPro, are legit useful. And heck, if nothing else I can now use the altitude and heat acclimation features to justify my slow performance. The only features missing on the Edge are address-specific navigation, round-trip routing which you can send from Garmin Connect Mobile instantly anyway , and POI routing which I rarely if ever use.
Whether or not Garmin has any stumbles as production expands though remains to be seen over time. Found This Post Useful? Support The Site!

It is with bluetooth, a Polar H7. Trying to reconnect in the Garmin was no problem and it worked for the rest of the ride. Yesterday i made a ride for about hour a and the connection with the HR sensor, speedsensor and cadensesensor was no problem. There was no connection anymore. I had to disable the bleutooth on the phone and enable it again.
Then it worked and the ride was uploading with no problem. When i am not on my bike i always use a Galaxy Watch and the connection is alwas there. While riding i let the watch at home. Two questions: 1. Start timer, start riding to the meeting point, 2.
Once at meeting point, tap anywhere on the screen and 3. Alternatively, you can tap on navigate at the start, select the course and have navigate to the meeting point to start the actual course. Again, assuming the menu is similar to , 1. Swipe down, 2. Why cant Garmin spend more time getting the existing features right and not spend time on fancy things that most user wont use.
Instead, what you wanna look at there is any crazy power spikes. The data purely comes from your power meter on this metric. So if that data is wrong no matter who is at fault , FTP will be off too. What about on Garmin Connect though? Strava smartly , like filters those out. If you want to shoot me the. Ray at my domain. Are there any reported issues with the freezing? After 5 rides with my not the !! Cadans and spedometer connected. Some people have seen issues on the first firmware version that came on the unit in the box, updating that to the most recent firmware has resolved the vast majority of issues for those people not all issues, but most issues in most cases.
Thanks Ray. Unfortunately I am already on the latest firmware, I updated it straight out of the box. I also use a PM Quarq. To upload my rides I have to open up the GC app. Rob- just curious. Have you connected the directly to WIFI? Otherwise I think maybe you do need to connect to the GC app to upload.
Hi, yesterday by froze twice, had to reset it both times. Going to try it again today, I hope is not a defective unit just a bug. Mine froze 2 miles from the end on Friday, so that was my first data loss. Yesterday and today it worked flawlessly for longer rides, navigating so I could use ClimbPro its choice of what is a climb still seems very weird.
I solved my problem with disappearing maps by turning off the Trailforks overlay. Just to clarify, when it froze — did you legit lose data or a ride? It should have either saved the file, or allowed you to resume the file when you turned it back on again.
No, sorry, I should have made that clear. I have the same issue. With the , Garmin Connect seems to need to be running to get an auto upload or for the Live Track to work. If I start the Garmin Connect App before my ride and leave it running, all is good. I love the fact that my Wahoo was However it has started to give me bad data. It time to replace. Did they announce and start shipping way before it was ready? Same goes for smartphone setup.
Is there any easy and quickest to calibrate the power meter using the ? Now I need to go inside the power meter and click calibrate…no direct link.
Can anyone confirm this? Hi, I have different experience. You need to have the sensor actively on so pedal a few times. Hi Ray, thanks for answering, then is definitely something strange on my unit.
And to confirm, the power meter icon is on and not blinking? Also, if you click that sensors button, then select your Assioma pedals, and then do you get a calibrate button? Alternatively, click on sensors, select Assioma, check its settings and turn automatic calibration on. This way I can do it perfectly. Currently I have 2 powermeters detected XX and another longer with letters and numbers.
I thought it was both pedals, but it may be both kind of connections…. Go ahead and delete that out. Would any of you make me the favour os posting a screenshot of that screen where I can see the calibrate option please I reaallyyyy appreciate it!
Antonio, did you solve your problem? Its the same with me, no direct calibration. If you ve got a solution please share. As always-thank you for taking the time to complete such wonderful reviews and follow up with answers for users. Mine is showing that it will be delivered today. Has anyone found out how to use Connect IQ data fields? Any chance you have a track overlay comparison such as with the Analyzer or something else? That makes it easier to see where the two tracks differ.
Apologies if anyone else has already asked this but I am having issues with the climb pro feature on the When I load a route I can see the page where it has identified the climbs m. Had elevation screen turned off. So I will try this hint on my next trip to see if this can workaround. Even so the elevation screen seem useless I would like the Climb Pro to work.
Two questions related to the vs 1. Ray, thanks for the VERY quick response. I guess I just need to go to my nearest Garmin retailer and look at screen size and think about my 70 year old eyes and what they can manage. It seems to be brighter and sharper. Louis — thanks for the feedback. I have a friend with a which is the same screen as best I can tell. Hi, First of all, thanks for you clear review regarding this device.
I have a question regarding live Strava segments. Currently I have a edge , and as far as I know there is no possibility to see your starred Strava segments when navigating a course. I almost always navigate a course… So I almost never see the live segment on my device. Now my question is if the edge does support this feature during a course?
Other devices such as a wahoo have this feature. Thanks for in advance for checking my question! Hi everyone. I have purchased successive Garmin edges…the latest being the What is going on with the LiveTracking feature? Garmin heavily promotes it but Live Track has not been working for over a year!!
Try again later. Can someone finally get to the bottom of this. New , new IPhone…. Second, the sync function works only half the time…. I have seen some screenshots from the where u have the calibrate link there but none in the Using a !!!

If I replace the basemap on a I have also add another map.
So what is the difference then between the and the ? I must admit, the fact that Garmin still charges for maps is enough to push me toward Wahoo. Garmin needs to adapt or be left behind. At least you can get actual free maps with all the things a map needs that will display on a Garmin, or you can make it easy on yourself and buy from Garmin if you need something other than the map for an entire continent that your device came with.

Then you use MapInstall to actually install it on your Garmin device; it allows you to graphically select which portion of the map you actually want to install.
The file installed on your Garmin will have a. Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed response. Apologies I should have included the following, Edge and Getting a Mac to boot the Garmin and recognize it as a storage device is not always as simple as plugging it in. Then it usually works. Just go ahead and install BaseCamp. The installer used also install MapManager and MapInstall and it probably still does. So I can easily believe that you have only 12 Mb left on it.
So install BaseCamp, see if you get MapManager and MapInstall, and if you do try installing a map on your Mac and then selecting tiles to install on your Edge which will need to be mounted.
I also managed to get map files to show up in my Garmin folder and I also did this on my old PC which I dragged out of the loft but on both occasions nothing came through to the Garmin just a blank screen. MapInstall does that job. As I said, you can select specific tiles and put only what you need on the I had a similar problem with the original Fenix, which accidentally could display maps, but there were only about 10 Mb available.
I managed to get half of Centre and half of Huntington counties on it using a stripped down OSM map that someone made specifically for the Fenix. The cable is usually the key to mounting. I rarely have any trouble with my , and it never dismounts on its own. This is the first screen I encounter when double clicking. Double check and make sure your Edge is mounted. This is what I get when I start up MapInstall 4. You might want to look inside and see what it shows.
The GarminDevice. The Finder can see it, so MapInstall should be able to. So go to Plan B: link to dcrainmaker. You want to make sure you download an. The reason it caught my eye is that it has a special section on the Map now installed! Great article and thanks so much. I was nearly at the point of selling my Edge as the maps were so basic and difficult to use, but downloading these maps has changed things completely.
The step by step guide is awesome and even allowed a tech idiot like me to install it in about 5mins. Just in case you want to drop them a line…. Brilliant service thanks DC.
Hi Ray, thanks for all your advice on this site its been a godsend. I have a Garmin Have you any advice? Thanks in advance Symon. Great instructions as always. I can answer my own question, the has a massive text box at the top, taking up a lot of space, it can be disabled thus: Guide Text — This setting controls how Guide Text is displayed on the top of the Map page.
Set to Never, there are other options. Thanks Nick, your welcome Nick. Hi Ray. Are you aware of any problem with the garmin. There is a message at the top of the page suggesting this feature is disabled due to a server problem. I wondered whether this is a recurring issue that you have experienced previously or whether this is new. Great guide, I used it lots over the years and also sent countless friends to it as well. However link to garmin.
Is there any alternative your aware of where I can select squares on map for downloading, I have the old Garmin which has hardly any space for mapping. I find the default representation of such segments quite space consuming and color aggressive. First: thanks for ALL the great reviews etc.
Second: thanks for this specific one; good as ever. I thought that It would be a good idea to update the map so followed these instructions and they worked — as expected. What might be the cause of this and how do I rectify it?
Do you have any information regarding Garmin having disabled the ability to select individual tiles to download at link to garmin. If you start riding a climb then you have briefly the full height profile and it disappears becoming a horizontal line when you start the climb most likely the Edge uses then its DEM map.
If I made the same trip using Strava Route Creation getting a GPX crumb trail , then I see the height profile and during a climb the height profile remains present.
In summary the height information in the Routable Bicycle Map Europe is not legible by the Edge Is there a work around possible? As mentioned in the article, the worldwide maps lack contour lines. However the site also hosts maps with a little bit more detail eg vegetation and contour lines for all of Europe at link to openfietsmap.
I see Ray said in the article that strange things happen when he enables 2 maps of the same area. I can download the Wandrer map which is just a line drawing of roads. I imagine there are dfferent levels of map — presumably this is how Garmin display routes or segments on the base map.
How can I make the Wandrer data show over the basemap? Is it a certain file type needed and where on the device would it need to be stored? Use BBBike extracts extract. Follow steps below: 1. Select your area you can use the polygon tool to create custom 3.
Enter Email address and click Extract 4. Email will be sent, download zip 5. Thank you, you are real MVP! Thank you so much! Just spent an hour scratching my head trying to figure out how to get the maps working on the I did all the steps you mentioned on a new Great article as usual! One can then just drop the file into the GPS device!
Looking for some help here. I hope to be cycling in the Netherlands this summer. I am new to GPS devices. I have bought a Garmin Explore primarily for the navigation help it provides. It has the following maps loaded and enabled:. Do these maps have me covered for the Netherlands with these settings? Should I disable any of the maps for better coverage? Or, do I need to upload other maps for coverage? I am looking to upload. I live near an Amish area in central Pennsylvania. Those horses have no shame or control.
Is there any way to get topographical maps on the Garmin that might show mountain bike trails? Check out openmtbmap. I used to use them.
As I recall, however, you need to turn contours on, so check to see if your allows that and that you have them turned on. Hi, I have been using OSM maps downloaded onto a Garmin Edge using your instructions for a number of years and they are brilliant. However my Micro SD card recently split so is no longer useable. When I came to replace the maps on a new SD card there is a message on the garmin. You may need to refresh the browser cache first CTRL-F5 and the site only permits users to download maps by whole countries rather than individual tiles.
I understand that this problem has been present for the past 12 month or so. My question is: is it possible to down load multiple files of different countries and save these onto an SD, given that they would all have the same file name — if it is possible how can this be done? For anybody interested, I found a solution to my problem. As you can now only select whole countries and not individual tiles.
I have discovered if you download and unzip separate files for each country, keep the file name unchanged for one file ie gmapsupp. Img file extension ie Spain. Does this method still work? I have attempted to visit the website and have a map prepared, but it seems that the servers might be fried or down. Just wanted to check that this method is still viable. No quite as intuitive, but this site works: link to extract. Has this site work for you?
Hi all Just tried this and there is obviously something wrong with the site as the wait is 85 days. Considering the wait is over 3 months to download a map from garmin. It seems that openstreetmap is no longer monitored and is now down permanently. Do you have an alternative for free gps maps? This is working. Same map type, different UI. Sorry if that makes no sense. Ray, can you update the post to tell the website is dead?
Current queue is Unable to actually choose specific map segments not that it really matters with a 7 month download queue. Thanks for this, saved my bacon! I bought my Edge in Thailand and ended up with the Asia version. Why do Garmin make it so hard? On Wahoo this is just a couple of clicks and is free. Also the Asia version of the only gets a 6 month old version of firmware 7. I eventually got UK maps loaded from Frikart.
The servers in the article above had a plus day queue for map processing, All very messy. My first purchase of a Garmin device. Really very frustrated at this stage and its hard to get refunds with Thailand retail law and culture. Must research more thoroughly next time. Sadly the garmin openstreetmap nl website isnt properly working anymore. It is only possible to download the entire map of a country and therefore it is no longer useable with my edge.
Do you know of any other way to create maps of selected areas only? I went through the openstreetmap request process about a month ago. Email confirmation back. Just checked again; days. This write up was helpful in that respect so thank you! I assume Garmin paid them off to functionally shut it down although I just made that up all by my ownself. Would be interesting to know. Garmin already WAY not my favorite company. Could you share how you purchased the maps from Garmin? What was the process?
I cant find anywhere how to do this. It was a few months ago at this point. I did reach out to garmin support btw. Is there a problem with having all of these maps enabled at the same time? I received an error message on my Fenix 6X Pro and was told that Garmin no longer supports third party maps from these platforms.
Could you update this post with some alternative-s ways how to download and install OSM maps on Garmin Edge computers including older models such as ? Just got an edge
